- But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek.
Titus accompanied Paul in his missionary journeys. In this Passage, Paul says when he came to Jerusalem with Titus, he had external pressure from the Judaisers who demanded that Titus needs to receive a circumcision in order to become a true Christian.
Titus was a Gentile believer. Therefore, he did not receive a circumcision. And these false brothers who secretly slipped into the Jerusalem church said,
Acts 15:1, 5
- Certain people came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the believers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved.”
- Then some of the believers who belonged to the party of the Pharisees stood up and said, “The Gentiles must be circumcised and required to keep the law of Moses.”
So who was Titus anyway?
His name appears in 2 Corinthians
- As for Titus, he is my partner and co-worker among you. As for our brothers, they are representatives of the churches and an honour to Christ. (2 Corinthians 8:23)
We know from the Paul's letter to Timothy, Titus went to Dalmatia at one time (2 Timothy 4:10).
We see that Titus was also left in Crete at one time for missions.
Titus 1:4, 5
- To Titus, my true child in a common faith:
- Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.
- This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you.
Titus was saved by grace of Jesus through faith in Him, and not by circumcision. No, Titus was not even circumcised! He was not a Jew. He was a Greek saved by God because He extended His promises and salvation to the Gentiles.
Galatians 3:27-29
- For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
- There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
- And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.
